Cure the winter blues with a spa day that you can do right now. All you need is coconut oil, honey and sugar. And you probably have all of those in your cupboard right now – no need to pop to the shop! Anything else you have on hand is just icing on the cake.
Run a warm bath, light some candles (maybe some Miss Chandelier’s Boutiques “Scent the Mood” candles? Eh? See what I did there?) and drop in a bath bomb or “Beau-Tea” bath tea bag if you got them. (I’m on fire!)
Coconut Oil and Sugar Body Scrub
While the faucet for the tub is running, run and mix together a luxurious body scrub that will leave you with super soft delicious skin.
1 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup white sugar
Mix the two ingredients together into it thick paste in a bowl or sealable container and take straight to the bath. Because there’s no preservative, this is a one time use mixture, so feel free to use liberally while scrubbing up. Don’t save any for later – it’s gonna grow mold and bacteria.
Coconut Oil Hair Mask
Next, you can quench your thirsty winter-ridden locks with a coconut oil hair mask.
Take a handful of coconut oil and massage into your dry, unwashed hair, starting at the ends and working your way up. It’s best to apply more at the bottom of your hair than at the top, in case it is hard to remove. If you have too much coconut oil in your roots and don’t rinse all of it away, then when your own natural sebum starts to saturate your strands you’ll have double-oil-trouble, leaving you looking like a greasy mess. So when it doubt, add more to the ends.
Take a wide tooth comb and comb through your your hair to evenly distribute the coconut oil, then tie your hair up and away from your face. How you want to do this is your choice. You could use a hair clip, a towel, a shower cap, or saran wrap (I’ve never used that one before). Leave the coconut oil in your hair as you bathe and rinse out after 1 to 2 hours using shampoo.
Organic Raw Honey Face Mask
Before you hop into the bath, slather your face in an organic honey facial mask for it’s moisturizing and acne-fighting benefits. Honey is a natural humectant, which draws moisture out of the air, and a natural antimicrobial, which kills microbes and bacteria which can help with acne or other bacterial skin infections. You only need one ingredient for this, so make sure you have it ready in the bathroom so you don’t have to run around the house for anything else because it will drip everywhere.
Apply an even layer of honey to your face, it can be any kind of honey you like as long as it is 100% pure honey. There are some brands of honey which are just colored corn syrup, which does not have the same benefits real honey does. Some people swear and prefer raw honey, which is the thicker and cloudier kind of honey that has a slight gritty texture, but the filtered golden honey is fine, too.
Bonus tip: you can apply a honey mask to other parts of your body, like your legs or arms after shaving to get even softer skin than not using honey at all. If you can afford the honey, that is. (It takes a lot. Special occasion type of thing.)
Coconut Oil Body Lotion
After you’ve bathed, showered and rinsed off the honey and coconut oil, try using pure coconut oil to moisturize your skin. After drying, (this is key, oil and water don’t mix so you need to make sure your skin is dry) take a handful of coconut oil and massage into your skin. Bonus massage for your little DIY spa day. Avoid using coconut oil for the face as it is considered highly comedogenic (clogs pores) and can cause acne and other problems. Coconut oil is a greasier oil, so it will stay slick on the skin for quite a while. If you have the time to hang around to air dry, great. If you need to get going quickly, lightly wipe any excess residue off with a microfiber towel before dressing.
So, there you go. A luxurious and healthy spa day that you can treat yourself to right now, without having to run to the store. Play some music, light some candle, drink some champagne to make it just that much more special.
Do you have any pampering rituals? Let me know! Let’s have a spa day together.
